The Lexington area was first sparsely settled by Europeans in 1775. Its settlers named their community in honor of the site of the first skirmish of the Revolutionary War. Lexington was incorporated in 1828. For most of its history, Lexington's economy was mainly based in textile and furniture manufacturing.

As the population of nearby Rowan County increased, people were forced to settle further away from the county seat. To rectify this, Davidson County was formed from Rowan on December 9, 1822. It was named after General William Lee Davidson, a hero of the Revolutionary War who was killed in the battle of Cowan's Ford.
